How to STOP Those Freakin Auto Dm’s

I Love Twitter! It’s brilliant in its simplicity. It forces you to make your point quickly. It’s an incredible Networking tool. I have met a lot of people on Twitter, had phone conversations with many of them and even met several in person.

But I do have one pet peeve about Twitter. Those Automatic Direct Messages  Auto DM’s) that some people send you when you follow them annoy the heck out of me!  You know what I’m talking about …

I follow a LOT of people and get a LOT of those DM’s and they annoy the heck out of me. I expressed my frustration in a Tweet and a couple of people told me their is a way of blocking them. I decided to look into it further and here’s what I found …

At the time of writing this there are two main services that send those Auto Dm’s.  Tweetlater and SocialToo Luckily they both have an Opt Out Procedure. So without any further Adieu here is what you do (you can thank me later)

Tweetlater Opt Out Instructions

1)  Log in to Twitter.

2)  Follow @OptMeOut.

They will follow you back within a few minutes.

3)  Wait until you’ve received the email from Twitter that tells you @OptMeOut has followed you back.

4)  Then send a DM to @OptMeOut. (You can write whatever you want in the DM, it does not matter.)

5)  After sending the DM, unfollow @OptMeOut. (This way your opting out remains private since people won’t see you in the list of @OptMeOut’s followers. They will unfollow you as well.)

TweetLater will, within a few minutes of you sending your DM, stop sending you any further automated welcome DMs.

Your decision to opt-out remains private. They will never disclose it to anybody, unless required by law.

If you ever change your mind about opting out, please submit a Help Desk ticket and ask us to remove them from the opt-out list.

ok, agree for the most part. What about it is manual and the person onthe other end just wants to say thanks – which one do you prefer – DM or just @user reply?

Manual is Fine if you have the time. I just can’t stand the Automatic ones. Especially the one’s trying to sell me stuff

I absolutely agree onthe people that are trying to sell stuff. As I am one of the guys that are always sending a “thank you” note after each follow i will change that and I will start sending a @user reply instead …

Don’t you also need to block @optmeout from your followers?  Or else it will still reveal what you’ve been doing.

They will Unfollow you after you unfollow them

There’s no explanation describing how the engine figures out the DMs are auto replies?

Just FYI, SocialToo now auto-opts you out of TweetLater as well if you opt-out directly on SocialToo.

I personally don’t see a problem with 1 (one) DM from new followers because it’s not like you HAVE to click the link to what they’re promoting. But then again, I don’t follow 1000’s of people just for the hell of following them hoping they will follow back, which is pretty much the way to build your network of followers fast. If a few DM’s gets you steaming maybe Twitter is not the tool to be using?

This opt out is just for one auto-DM service, Tweetlater. It does not work unless the user is sending auto-DM through Tweetlater.
